Types of Pain
Neck pain accounts for almost 1% of all visits to a primary care physician in the United States and may result from abnormalities in the soft tissues – the muscles, ligaments, and nerves – as well as in bones and joints of the spine. There are four principal types of neck pain:
- Axial neck pain
- Whiplash-Associated Disorder (WAD)
- Cervical radiculopathy
- Cervical myelopathy
Physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, or physiatrists, are physicians concerned and trained in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of persons with physical and/or cognitive disability. Physiatrists treat a wide range of problems from back pain to shoulder injuries to spinal cord injury. They specialize in restoring function to people.
